Story

Hi everyone!
Let me just start by saying I’ve never run 10km and I’ve never run in the Cane 2 Coral fun run. I have run 5km (not in an event) but that was pre baby and I’m now 11 months post C section.

I have a number of barriers such other commitments and existing injuries, so my Physio brain tells me that a realistic yet challenging goal for myself is to half walk/half run the 10km event. If I manage to do more than that then it’ll be even more of an accomplishment.

To motivate me further, I’ve decided to dedicate my efforts toward raising funds for Kidney Health Australia. This is a cause close to my heart as my father had a transplant when I was only 18 months old, which lasted 24 years, and is now a home dialysis patient in a rural community.

He is the most humble and hard-working man that I know, and doesn’t let anything (even chronic and complex illnesses) prevent him from living his best life running a cattle property with my mum and competing in drag racing comps.

The knowledge of this makes any challenge I face (medical or otherwise) irrelevant, and if he can still have so much go in him then I can do this 10km, though I’m sure I’ll complain about aches and pains more than you EVER have, Dad!

So if you see me out and about ‘running’, give me some encouragement - I’ll need it!

Also, do yourself a favour. If you identify with any of the risk factors for renal disease listed below then discuss them with your GP. Let’s educate everyone about renal disease!

Around 1.7 million Australians aged 18 years and over (one in every ten adults) have signs of chronic kidney disease. If you know the risk factors and ask your doctor for a regular Kidney Health Check you can help detect kidney disease early and improve your outcomes.

Adult Australians are at an increased risk of chronic kidney disease if they:
- have diabetes
- have high blood pressure
- have established heart problems (heart failure or heart attack) or have had a stroke
- have a family history of kidney failure
- are obese with a body mass index (BMI) 30 or higher
- are a smoker
- are 60 years or older
- are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin
- have a history of acute kidney injury.

Please support my efforts by making a secure online donation and a message of support.
I would also really appreciate it if you could 'Like' and share my page above or comment below so more people know about it.

Thanks so much for your support!

Kidney Health Australia

Kidney Health Australia was established in 1968 as the Australian Kidney Foundation. It is now a cohesive national body—a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improve health outcomes and quality of life for people living with kidney disease and their carers. It operates primarily due to the generosity of the public, largely in the form of donations, bequests and community fundraising.
