Teams Aplenty to Race from Cane to Coral
IT’S all about teams at this year’s Cane 2 Coral Fun Run on Sunday August 7 as an all-new team entry registration has been introduced. Not only can you grab your friends, family, work colleagues or school group together to join up, you can also vie for cash prizes in a range of categories plus 10% of your team registration will be donated back to your nominated charity. How’s that for team work?
Jason Pascoe, President of Cane 2 Coral, is really excited about bringing team participation to this year’s event. “Being able to run, walk or jog together as a team will make it so much more fun for so many more people. There are people who work together, play together, train together and now they are able to compete together as a team with great cash prizes on offer, and there’s an extra boost to their nominated charity. We can’t wait to see what each team brings to race day.”
One business that has gone a little nutty for the new team registration is the Acorn Nuts who are made up of 20 staff from the two local Acorn Childcare Centres. Team captain Jasmine Jeffrey says the team application sits really well with Acorn’s philosophies and they can’t wait to get started. “Acorn has a strong belief in health and fitness and we love to boost team morale, so signing up as a team was perfect. We’re encouraging all our staff to join up and giving them the option to choose whichever distance they prefer. One of our owners is a marathon runner so he’ll be doing the 21 kilometres, but most of us are signed up for the 8 or 4km distance. Cane 2 Coral is a fantastic event; we think being involved doubles as a great way to promote Acorn and contribute to our community, we’re really looking forward to it.”
Cash prize categories are sponsored by The Waves and include best dressed, primary or secondary schools, work groups and sports or community groups. Teams also nominate a charity of choice, which sees the Cane 2 Coral committee donate 10% of the team’s registration fees to that charity (conditions apply), so the more your team sign up the bigger the contribution . Team registrations are now open for the August 7 event please go to

Everyone’s a medal winner at The Friendlies Cane2Coral

Racegoers at the Friendlies Cane 2 Coral will be able to wear their race achievement with pride, with race medallions being awarded to each participant this year.

In its seventh year, Friendlies Cane 2 Coral president Jason Pascoe said the medallions would not only serve as a memento of the event, but they would add colour to the party at the finish line.

“Each leg of the race will have a corresponding coloured lanyard. Orange for the 21.1km, green for the 15km, blue for the 8km and purple for the 4km,” Mr Pascoe said.

“We thank our naming sponsor, the Friendly Society Private Hospital, for their donation of these colourful medallions.”

Friendly Society Private Hospital business development manager Stuart Bonnett said after supplying the race hats to the Friendlies Cane 2 Coral for the past six years, it was nice to have a change to the medallions.

“We have lots of race regulars, so it is good to be able to offer participants something different this year as recognition for their participation and achievement,” Mr Bonnett said.

“The colours of the lanyard also mean racers can display their achievement, big or small, around their neck with pride.”

Medallions will be handed out at the finish line of the event on Sunday, August 7.

Registration is open for individuals and teams at Register and join a team and 10% of the registration fees will be donated back to the charity of the team’s choice. For more information, visit

The Ready Set Go! Fitness Training program from Cane2Coral is on again this year!

Jason Pascoe, Cane2Coral President said, “The Ready Set Go! 10-week Fitness Training program, now in its second year, was designed to encourage healthier lifestyles, by providing the community the opportunity to train with fellow competitors to get ready for the Friendlies Cane2Coral fun run under the guidance and encouragement of professional trainers.

“I knew I wouldn’t train on my own so it was a fantastic opportunity for me to train in a group. Having the free sessions was a brilliant idea, and I cannot speak highly enough about our trainer.  His professionalism and genuine concern for each participant was second to none.” – JE Bundaberg

Last year a number of the people in the program came along with a family member or friend to just keep them company and maybe get a little exercise.  They told their trainers from the start that they were not runners and were adamant that they were only going to walk. Through the understanding and gentle encouragement (some jokingly called it torture) of the YMCA trainers, who customised the training sessions to cater to all ages, fitness levels and distance categories, these participants were pleasantly surprized at how much they exceeded their expectations.

“I found the group great with everyone encouraging each other and having a laugh – particularly on cold mornings.  During the last week of training I was amazed at my improvement when I managed to jog 3 of the 4km.  On race day I set myself the goal of jogging the whole way and I did it! Never would have believed it 10 weeks earlier.  I have continued running since and now enjoy the buzz” – JD Mundubbera

Jason Pascoe said, “The measure of success of the program was that it changed the lives and attitudes about fitness of all the participants.  We are really happy that we can offer the program again this year with the fantastic support of the Bundaberg Health Services Foundation and the YMCA.”

Ready Set Go!  Runs from 28th May through to 3rd of August and provides weekly training sessions, fitness advice and free gym passes to participants.  For details go to  Get ready for Friendlies Cane2Coral - Sunday, 7th August 2015 with 21.1k, 15k, 8k and 4k starts.

TEAMS running for FUNds
“The Friendlies Cane2Coral Fun Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, 7th August and this year we thought we’d bring out the fun and competitive spirit of our participants and focus on TEAMS while helping them raise money for the charity of their choice,” Jason Pascoe, FC2C President said. In 2016 for any team with 10 or more entrants, FC2C will donate 10% of the team’s registration fees to the team’s nominated charity or not-for-profit sports club.
Plus, there are TEAM Prizes that can be won under the categories of Best Dressed, Largest Team – Community/Sports Club, Work/Employer Group, Primary and Secondary Schools. To make things more interesting and to encourage teams to go all out this year, The Waves Sport Club are generously sponsoring 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes for each of these categories, which again will go to the teams nominated charity of choice.
General Manager Brendan Royall of The Waves Sports Club said, “We are extremely excited once again to support the FC2C program and being the sponsor for the TEAM categories with a tangible focus on our broader communities’ involvement is something that we are really looking forward to. The FC2C program ticks all the boxes for The Waves with its high focus on bringing our community together and promoting healthier lifestyles through the promotion of sport”.
Friendly Society Private Hospital CEO Alan Cooper said The Friendlies was proud to continue its partnership with the Friendlies Cane2Coral. “It is a great event to be involved in, as it gets the community thinking about health and fitness,” Mr Cooper said. “It is fantastic to have an event that people can work towards or try to improve from last year.” Mr Cooper said the camaraderie and fun spirit that had been growing around the event was also one of the things that made the Friendlies Cane2Coral different to other events. “It will be great to see stronger community participation in teams, not only for extra motivation but also for more fun. By joining a team, people can walk or run with their work mates, friends or family.”
